Most of the Peak District National Park is in the western half. Apart from the towns in the east, the county is very sparsely populated and small isolated villages are a feature of Derbyshire and the Peak District. The larger towns are Glossop, Buxton, Matlock, Ashbourne and Swadlincote to the west and Long Eaton, Ilkeston, Heanor, Alfreton, Bolsover, Eckington, Chesterfield and Dronfield to the east.

Derbyshire is very well served by road routes that center on Derby, Buxton, Chesterfield and Matlock. The M1 motorway passes Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Alfreton and Bolsover. The A6 links Derby with Belper, Matlock and Buxton, the A52 links Long Eaton, Derby and Ashbourne, the A61 links Alfreton to Chesterfield and Dronfield, the A514 links Swadlincote to Derby. In the Peaks there are few major roads in the Peak District National Park and the A51 is the main route from Glossop to Sheffield in Yorkshire. The A624 links Glossop to Buxton via the A6.
