A large county located in central England covering 1,016 square miles and with a population of 915,000. The county town is Derby.
Industry
Tourism and agriculture are important elements in the local economy. In the eastern part of the county are coal deposits and mining still occurs in these areas. Heavy industry and car manufacturing are to be found around the major cities especially near Derby with the large Toyota plant.
Geography
The major rivers are the Trent, the Dove (with its beautiful valley “Dovedale”), the Derwent, and the Wye. The landscape is flat in the south, rising in the north to more than 2,000 ft in the Peak district. The largest sections of the Peak National Park lie within the county boundaries.
History
The Romans left many ancient sites amd villas. Derbyshire was part of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia. There are many Norman castles and churches. The great house of the dukes of Devonshire is at Chatsworth.
